Hello, I'm back in LA for two weeks... then driving up to SF in a Uhaul for the move. I still keep a place in LA but I will spend most of my time in SF. Pix on the left is where I grew up, right on the Historic Route 66. There's nothing there... Just miles and miles of corn.
I have a ton of email to answer. I thought I'll share this one with you:

Hi James,
Sorry it took me a while. I've been traveling.
I think I'm the wrong person to ask about these things.
You might want to check out Tom Bianchi or Greg Gorman.
See below for my lame answers.
Good luck to you.
xoxo
Van

Subject: Photography student looking for help.
Van Darkholme
Aloha Mr. Van Darkholme,
My name is James xxxx and I am a student at the xxxx Institute of Photography in xxxxx, California. I am taking a marketing class and I am looking for advice from Professional Photographer who's I admire. I would appreciate any information that you would share with me. I am especially interested to know the following.
1. What drew you to the business of photography? I don't see photography as business. It's more of a curse. I have images in my head and they need to come out.
2. How did you get started and what challenges did you encounter? I was a model in my twenties and I asked a lot of questions during the photoshoots... tech questions..f-stops..etc. I never went to school for it. I mainly shoot Men in Ropes so it's difficult for me to find models for it. Even today, it still a taboo from many people.
3. What works best for you on getting and keeping clients? Again, I'm an artist not a business man. I'm poor and I will die poor. Maybe my work worth something when I'm gone.
4. How is the digital technology affecting your business? Being a control freak, digital photography gives me complete control from shooting to printing. It's all me from the beginning to the end... not someone else's interpretation of my art.
5. What advice do you have for a student photographer wanting to enter this industry? Sorry, I'm in no possition to give advices. I don't do it for the money. I do it because I have to. Otherwise, I'll be shooting commercial stuffs... that would pay my bills but I have no interest in it. Sometimes I think my photography only pleases me but that's okay too. I get a jolt of electricity from my head to my toes when I produce a great image. I guess it's like giving birth and that's success to me.
Again thank you for you time and I look forward to talking to you more about this passion for photography.
Mahalo James
